Food Plots

The 2007 warm season plots were a success given the record drought the area experienced. Even with the drought, our persistence paid off and the third crop of soybeans we planted are growing well. With more than 200 acres of plots, the critters have plenty to eat, and are easy to observe. Critters that roamed through the area during the rut, etc., obviously noticed that Ocmulgee Banks offers the best forage and cover in the neighborhood! This is one of the factors why our adult buck:doe ratio is balanced. Yearling bucks almost always disperse. When they find quality habitat, they tend to take up residence. We are undoubtedly keeping our mature bucks at home (based on the footage from the four motion activated video cameras) and gaining additional bucks from the neighborhood (evidenced by new bucks being photographed/observed late in the season).

To insure that this trend continues, we are preparing to plant our fall food plots: we added another 280 tons of poultry litter during the first week of September 2007. The soybeans that are currently growing are providing great quality forage. In addition they add about 50 pounds per acre of nitrogen to the soil. Therefore the beans provide excellent forage during the growing season. The beans they produce are extremely high quality winter feed in form of protein and energy. All the game species at Ocmulgee Banks benefit from the crop rotation.
